“Don’t be a fossil, use the Sun”

The Macedonian Ecologists’ Movement is organizing an eco-happening at “11 October” primary school in Skopje to promote the use of alternative sources of energy, putting special emphasis on the solar energy. This manifestation is part of the project “Don’t be a fossil, use the Sun”. The campaign is specially designed to raise the awareness of the children as well as the adults for the danger of the excessive use of the fossil fuels and to emphasize the advantages and the benefits from using renewable sources, i.e. the Sun.

Participants at the eco-happening were primary school children who were part of the art workshop “The Sun – a source of life”. With watercolours they coloured the previously modelled objects in plaster which were in the shape of sun, keeping it afterwards as souvenirs. At special panels placed in the school hall, the children could write and draw their messages to the sun. The symbol of the eco-happening was "Soncko" who “shone” all the time as one of the most available and inexhaustible eco-sources of energy. “Soncko” distributed leaflets and fliers among the students to inform them on the negative effects of using fossil fuels, the global warming of the atmosphere, the glasshouse effect and the advantages of using the solar energy. As a gift, the participants received eco-bags with the campaign’s logo made of natural material.

The second part of the happening was dedicated to the presentation of a solar panel for acquiring hot water and a model of solar drier for fruit and vegetables, after which the children could taste some of the products dried in that manner. Within the project “Don’t be a fossil, use the Sun”, a tribune took place on “Inexhaustible potential of the Sun – a challenge for cleaner and healthier future”. Participants at the tribune were civil society organizations, MEM members, representatives of hotels, restaurants and interested citizens who got informed on the advantages of using solar panels and solar driers for fruit and vegetables in the fight against climate changes and the long-term energy saving in the households.

Part of the project are the presentations and the lectures on the ways of using the solar energy in the everyday lives, not only in the business sector, but in the households, too.
