EU Keeps Door Open for Balkan Countries and Turkey
EU has issued the progress reports for each country in the Balkans and for Turkey. The Commission's annual strategy document explaining its policy on EU enlargement has been adopted and become available on line. The document includes a summary of the progress made over the last twelve months by each candidate and potential candidate: Croatia, Macedonia, Turkey, as well as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo (under UN Security Council Resolution 1244). The general assessment is that enthusiasm for implementing the required reforms has slipped in the Balkans and in Turkey. The democratic forces in Serbia are still vulnerable and the political system in Bosnia-Herzegovina is in crisis. Reforms in Macedonia are lagging due to ethnic tension, while the future of Kosovo remains uncertain. For more information see:
