World Day without cars

At work without a car – a wise choice

The world day without cars was marked in Skopje a day earlier. The event was organized by the Ministry of environment and Spatial Planning and the CSO “Proaktiva”, which, on 21 September publicly supported the alternative and environmentally friendly means of transport. Driven by the international motto for 2005 which says: At wok without a car – a wise choice!”, the present supported the world initiative for cleaner and healthier environment.

The file was headed by the Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning, Zoran Sapurik and the Minister of Defense, Jovan Manasievski, who climbed in their bikes started the planned route. The campaign was supported by members of the diplomatic corps, the  Parliament, the Government, the bike unit from the Ministry of Interior, activists and devoted citizens.

Despite the rainy weather, the citizens on bikes, roller skates or on foot, supported the World Day Without Cars, showing willingness to give Skopje at least a two-hour relief from the traffic jam. With a desire to reduce the air-pollution in Skopje, at least for a day, but also to make the route easier for the present citizens, the organizers closed the street “Dimitrie Cupovski” for whole two hours.

“One car less” was the motto of the CSO “Proaktiva” activists, who have been working for several years on promoting the alternative means of transport, Within their activities directed towards sustainable transport, so far, they have realized several activities and campaigns, among which: Integral approach for solving the traffic problems from the aspect of their sustainability”, “Use the public transport, for a bike more”, “A real choice, without leaded petrol”, etc.

The alternative march, organized within this campaign, started at 11 o’clock at the fountain in the City Park and finished at the “Pela Square”, where the present could enjoy the music happening, organized by the organizers. Before the 3 o’clock traffic jam started, the citizens had enjoyed the feeling of a free pedestrian zone in the center of the city where the march had taken place. And then….Unfortunately, everything continued as usual!
