The UN Food and Agriculture Organization- FAO has been present in Macedonia since September last year. FAO has realized a very good cooperation with the Macedonian authorities and it is involved in the Republic of Macedonia Agriculture Program, in the reconstruction of the rural life influenced by the last years’ military conflict and the several years’ dry period. With that purpose, FAO implements several projects in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Watersupply, the NGOs and the private sector. The distribution of winter corn seeds and fertilizers has been finalized for the regions of Gostivar, Tetovo, Skopje, Kumanovo and Sveti Nikole and at the moment they are distributing cattle food in the regions of crisis.

According to this years’ activities program, FAO is implementing projects for distribution of potato, corn, wheat seeds, as well as fertilizers and other agricultural inputs for the spring and autumn sowing. The agricultural program will also tend to involve repairing of agricultural machine components that will be applied in the land preparation with a minimum capacity.

FAO is one of the biggest specialized agencies in the UN system and it is the leading agency for agriculture, forestry, fishing and rural development. At the same time it is one of the oldest UN agencies, established in 1945, with a purpose of raising the food quality and living standards level, to improve the agricultural production and rural living conditions. FAO works on decreasing the poverty and hunger in the world by promoting agricultural development and improving the food quality level, it tries to provide food security, defining it as food available at any time, to all people for their active and healthy life. At the same time FAO collects, analyses, translates and spreads information related to food and food quality, agriculture, forestry and fishing. The organization is a place from where farmers, scientists, state planners, merchants and NGOs get information and knowledge in order to make rational decisions in the processes of planning, investments, marketing, researches and training.
