60 years of UN
60 years promotion of peace and well being
The United Nations Organization is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its existence this year. The celebration with various activities starts in June and will last until September this year. The central manifestation that is to take place mid-September will promote the Millennium Development Goals as a signpost for a global action of the mankind for solving the key problems that concern the world population in general, and have an impact on the survival and the sustainable development of the Planet Earth.
The process called Millennium Development Goals was initiated by the UN organization at the World Millennium Summit five years ago, the goal being the creation of a better and safer world for the next millennium, through a collective security and global development partnership. The plan by 2015 has been drawn and its objective is to reach the ambitious global goals – from reducing the extreme poverty, through reducing the diseases such as AIDS, to providing universal primary education.
This year, UN is also celebrating 100 years (1905) since the birth of the former UN Secretary General, Dag Hammerscold. In the spirit of both celebrations, it might be good to remind ourselves of his words, said at one official meeting in 1956: “I have no doubts that 40 years from now we are still going to be engaged in accomplishing the same goals. How can we expect things to be different? The world organization is still a new adventure in the history of the mankind.”.
