DONOR AID

New Trends in Donor Aid Geography

The latest Newsletter of the International NGO Training and Research Center (INTRAC) analyses challenges development NGOs are facing in terms of the geography of aid changes. In the article, Brian Pratt, the author of the article and Director of INTRAC, notes that the massive channeling of funds into the Balkans is coming to an end. Instead, aid funds are now being sucked into Iraq and Afghanistan. Another change is noted in the entry of new players to the donor world as the EU expands East and its accession countries are obliged to create their own aid programmes. The article further explores trends in NGOs in both developing and developed countries growing dependence upon different forms of tax-based official funding. Finally, for international NGOs new opportunities and new competitors for EU funds are on the horizon, while local NGOs may find new donors with very different priorities opening offices in their countries.
