Call for protest

“No” to including Macedonia in the construction of nuclear plant “Belene”

In the middle of November, “Eko-svest”, supported by “Front 21/42”, called all civil society associations and all citizens who are against the spread of the nuclear industry in the Balkans – as a serious obstacle to the sustainable development and security of the region – to support their initiative for protest and join their forces for defining a common attitude against Macedonia’s involvement in the construction of the new nuclear plant Belene in Bulgaria. In the call, “Bele NE?”, they emphasize that: BeleNE is built on a seismically active area!; that the Macedonian public was excluded from the obligatory process of public discussions which had taken place before the decision for the construction of this nuclear plant was passed, which means that the Macedonian citizens were denied their rights guaranteed by the ESPO Convention. Besides the increased security measures, the breeder reactors’ safety can never be guaranteed: the nuclear waste remains radioactive at least in the next 240,000 years; the nuclear power plants and the dynamic nuclear waste are possible goals of terrorist attacks; the nuclear energy unprofitable; Macedonia possesses large potential of renewable types of energy which do not harm the environment, people’s safety and the economy” – writes the protest call.
