Two 10-year jubilees

A decade dedicated to the children in Macedonia

UNICEF, the United Nations International Children Fund and the programme "Step by Step" of the Foundation for Educational and Cultural Initiatives have celebrated 10 years of working for the welfare of children in Macedonia.

UNICEF opened its office in Macedonia in 1993 and since then it has worked on several aspects of health, education and protection of children rights. UNICEF operation in this 10-year period in Macedonia covers several activities such as providing means for vaccination, educational material, distribution of clothes, implementation of the project "Baby-Friendly Hospitals", help to children taken care of in institutions, promotion of the method of interactive studying. UNICEF gave considerable contribution in the fight against the respiratory diseases and the iodine deficit with children, as well as in other projects ranging from the physical rehabilitation to the children mental health.

The implementation of the programme "Step by Step" started in 1994 as a regional programme of the Foundation Open Society Institute and the George Town University from Washington, later continued by the Foundation for Educational and Cultural Initiatives. It emphasizes the basic principles of education in a democratic society. It offers active methods of education and stimulating environment for the children in kindergartens and primary schools through various activities such as: supporting the teachers' training, seminars, workshops, meetings, raising the public awareness, help in realizing partnership with national and international donor organization, researches, etc. The projects such as "Children on the Street", "Out of the Circle" are a great contribution to the protection of children rights and the integration of all children in the Macedonian society.
