WGGLE campaign

Vote for the nature!

Under the motto “Vote for the nature”, the Working Group on Greening of the Local Elections (WGGLE) is implementing a public non-partisan campaign during the local elections in order to promote the priority environmental questions for the local community. According to the WGGLE coordinator, Metodija Sazovski, the need for the campaign comes as a result of the decentralization process, through which the most competences for protection and promotion of the environment transfers to the local governments.

WGGLE’s objective is to inform the voters on the extended new executive powers of local governments on the topic of environment, as well as to motivate the voters to start raising environmental issues during the election campaign and thereby to start the process of making the local politicians accountable for the policies they proclaim. They will also strive to motivate the candidates for mayors and municipality councilors to make local environmental issues an important issue in their political programmes. WGGLE’s long-term goal is to promote concrete democratic tools that give citizens’ access to democratic decision-making and more specifically to make positive changes in the understanding of the environment as an important and real political issue.

The campaign for making the local elections greener, which is financially supported by the Dutch foundation “Millieukontakt Oost Europa” has been carried out on local and national level. On local level it involves the partner organizations Eko-Svest and Proaktiva from Skopje, Biosfera from Bitola, I.P.O. Krste Jon / Green Centre from Struga, EA Planetum from Strumica, EA Brica from Berovo and EA Kladenec from Pehcevo. They will be doing fieldwork within their municipalities. On national level, WGGLE main role will be to coordinate campaign activities, which includes logistic support to the PR activities of the included organizations, PR on a national level, preparing and implementing media campaign.
