The International Human Rights Internship Programme's (IHRIP) mission and work are based on the belief that human rights activists have knowledge and skills, as a result of their day-to-day work, that are important to the success not only of their own work, but the work of other activists and organisations, whether in their own or in other countries and regions. Twinning Partners to Conclude EU-funded Project to Combat Drugs in Macedonia
The adoption of a new National Drugs Strategy in line with the EU Drugs Strategy, and better coordination in the fight against drugs in Macedonia were the main results of a 15-month EU-funded twinning project that ended today with a closing meeting in Skopje. Under the 1 million Euro twinning project, managed by EAR, experts from Hungary and the Netherlands cooperated with the Ministry of Health and other state bodies to strengthen their ability to combat drug-related crime through the adoption and enforcement of legislation, and the development of an institutional framework for prosecuting drug offences. At the local level, there were four pilot cities involved: Skopje, Tetovo, Ohrid and Strumica, where drug demand reduction trainings and prevention programmes were held for local professionals. As a result of the active participation of municipalities, institutions, professionals and NGOs, local drugs strategies and action plans are being drafted and adopted with a special focus on the prevention and treatment side, thus forming local coordination mechanisms.
