The award “Borjan Tanevski” presented
Denko Maleski awarded it to “Braka Ramiz” School
PhD Denko Maleski is the first winner of the award “Borko Taneski” for 2004 which he received on 23 February in Skopje. The award is given for multiply expressed prominent personal attitude at the printed media in Macedonia, and the selection was done by the three-member commission consisting of Meto Jovanovski, Ali Aliu and Erol Rizaov. According to the commission, Denko Maleski’s texts show a civic courage, free of prejudices and inspired by the current European thought. “Maleski’s personal attitude, which was published in 2004 on several occasions, points to one which is free of illusions and it also demonstrates courage for facing the reality. His personal attitude reflects preoccupation for the everyday living, but it lacks calculations – both intellectual and reflective. That attitude is completely freed from any prejudices – national, racial or religious”, said among other things, Meto Jovanovski. Expressing his gratitude for the award, Maleski stated: “The award has made me happy, but also made me think. It made be happy because my political texts had never received any public recognition. And it made me think because since I remember myself, the country is the one that awards them. Obviously, times are changing”. The award, which amounts 75,000 denars, on behalf of the happy childhood of Borjan, Maleski gave to the children from “Braka Ramiz” School in Suto Orizari.
“Many children in Suto Orizari do not have as happy a childhood as Borjan did, who grew up in love, in a family of hard-working and noble parents. In Borjan’ s seminar thesis on the interethnic relations in Macedonia I see some quotations from my texts published in newspapers….To think with an open mind and to show understanding for the others – that approach which appears in his text is so familiar to me”, emphasized Maleski. Josif Tanevski, Borjan’s father is the one, together with his family who founded the award in the memory of his son, with the idea to contribute and support the authors in Macedonia who write columns or take up a brave attitude on the current social and political issues.
Borjan Tanevski, passed away two years ago at the age of 23, after a long and fatal illness. He graduated at the American College in Thessalonica and was supposed to continue his post-graduate studies at European College in Warsaw and Briege and at the prestigious London School of Economics in England. To show their respect towards his personality, the students and the professors from the American College in Thessalonica, founded the Memorial Fund “Borjan Tanevski” in 2003 for awarding a student’s essay on some current issue at a competition.
