Vlach Women Branch “Mandra”

Vlach women have cherished their tradition

The Vlach Women Branch “Mandra” chose the National Day of the Vlachs, 23 May, to promote their so-far and future activities. At the “Aleksandar Palace” Hotel, in front of the large number of guests, Jana Mihailova, president of the branch, spoke about the place and the role of Vlach women in the society. “The Vlach women have played an important role in the history. By tattooing a cross on their forehead, they fought for keeping the faith, cherished the mother tongue by transferring it from one generation to another until today by means of their warm mothers’ words. Modestly, but wisely, they managed to preserve the tradition and the customs. Is there anything more sacred than the mother’s tongue, than the ways we were raised in our homes, our customs and traditions that distinguish peoples from one another?”

Vlach women are actively participating in the social and the political life in Macedonia. “Together with the other women they are integrated and recognized as good experts and are present in all spheres of the social living”, said Marija Nikolova from the Ministry of Education and Science. The National Day of the Vlachs was marked with many other activities and events.

The National Day of the Vlachs – 23 may – is marked since on that day in 1905, the Turkish Sultan Abdul Hamid II, with a special paper, known as IRADE, recognized the Vlach as a nation, giving them the right to open schools, churches, publish books in their mother tongue. The National Day of the Vlachs is celebrated for the first time this year as a national holiday.
