Paris conference on biodiversity
To conserve ecosystems
From 19 to 21 September over 400 participants from the civil sector and governments of the EU countries, Latin America and Africa gathered in Paris to consider the possibility for conservation of biodiversity and the ways how biodiversity to become an integral part of the cooperation in Europe and wider. The participants of the conference “Biodiversity in European Cooperation”, organized by the EU member countries, as well as IUCN – Nature Conservation World Organization, expressed their worries as the constant collapse of ecosystems endanger the sustainable development system that should improve the life of the poorest people on the planet.
“It is not impossible the ecosystems to be conserved and returned to their former much better state. A common action is necessary and don’t forget that we return ecosystems to their original state, we do not create new one”, stated at the conference Akim Stajner, manager of the UN Ecology Program.
The need to strengthen the relation between biodiversity and sustainable development has been recognized by the international community that defines conservation of biodiversity as contribution to reduce poverty and the biodiversity as an essential doer of the total life on the planet Earth.
The participants paid special attention to strengthening the civil sector, emphasizing that it is key about conservation of ecosystems. Namely, the civil sector has the most contact with the local community, it is familiar with their needs and it becomes a more equal governmental partner in all spheres.
By 2010 the biodiversity objective should be achieved, that is, most of the ecosystems to be conserved and returned to their original condition and that is why the whole international community shall work in the following years under the motto to stop biodiversity loss by 2010 and afterwards. It is an objective that affects us all.
