Civic activism in the communist era
Under patronage of the Popular Front
After the World War II, the only opportunity to organize citizens, that is to form associations, was the so-called Popular front. In this period, when the only uniting force was the strong and unique political party – the Communist, the Popular front was an organization which recognized this political platform, but was not a part of the party. Under patronage of the Popular front many youth and women’s organizations were formed, and the people who were their members and who were even in the management, were not simultaneously and necessarily members of the Communist Party. Most of them gave great contribution to the reconstruction of the country destroyed by the war, but also in building the intellectual potential and cultural milieu of the new Macedonian state.
