700 new cases of breast cancer a year
There are more than 500,000 new cases of breast cancer a year in the world, more than 150,000 in Europe and 700 in Macedonia, announced the Macedonian Anti-Cancer Association, presenting the statistic data on this disease. Due to the worrying data, the organization has raised a campaign for education and preventive check-ups of women, an action, which, in cooperation with the Red Cross, will be implemented on the territory of the whole country in a period of one year. Representatives from the organization say that in a period of one month, only in the territory of Skopje, 200 women have been checked, of which 11% were found to have breast changes that need further examination. The vice-president of the organization and a doctor at the Thoracic Surgery Clinic, Goran Kondov, says that for the time being, the best measures for prevention of the disease are in-time self-checks, clinical check-ups, and, in case certain changes are discovered, he recommends mammography. The early discovery, says Kondov, means greater possibility for healing, and from the Association, they emphasize that they need more mammography machines in order to meet the needs of the patients. The campaign of MACA will last until March next year, with a possibility to organize check-ups in other towns in Macedonia. The application for check-ups is done at the Red Cross premises in Kisela Voda.
