CIRa gave money and books to Roma pupils
The Center for Institutional Development CIRa and its partner organizations “Mir” and “Bairska Svetlina” gave money to the primary schools where Roma pupils attend classes. The schools are “Gjorgji Sugare” from Bitola, “Vasil Glavinov” from Cair and “Braka Ramiz I Hamid” from Suto Orizari. The first-prize awarded school got 40 000 denars, the second 24 000 and the third, 16 000. The money was raised during the NGO Fair in November last year within the Fund for providing books and school materials which had the total of 81 000 denars. Box for donations were placed in several locations during the Fair, where visitors could leave cards saying which school they wished to donate the money to, which, in fact, was how the schools to be given the money to were selected. Part of the donations was raised through the “Mir” and “T-Mobile” telephone line for donations. The schools will use the donations for buying textbooks and school materials for the Roma children who cannot afford to buy it themselves. Other schools that received donated money are: “Goce Delcev” from Sveti Nikole, “Vanco Prke” from Delcevo and “Bratstvo I Edinstvo” from Gostivar. To these schools, CIRa donated over 100 books for the school libraries.
A number of other material donations from individuals and institutions – the total of 493 000 denars - were raised within the fund for the young Romas. One of those who donated was the Mayor of Skopje, Trifun Kostovski, who provided money for 10 Roma pupils to attend English language course. The Children Creative Center “Karpos” will also include 10 children in some of its clubs. Five children will attend computer course at the city library “Braka Miladinovci” and will get one-year free membership in the library.
“Sixty percent of the pupils that go to “Gjorgji Sugare” primary school are Romas. Most of them become social cases with existential problems. Each school year, the civil society organizations provide books for them and that kind of help is always welcome”, said the Principal of the school, Zagorka Jovcevska. Sixty-four percent of the pupils at “Vasil Glavinov” primary school are also Romas, and that percentage in “Braka Ramiz I Hamid” is ninety-five.
