Red Cross Skopje has opened an important complex

“Dare Bombol” training centre has become a regional training centre

The Regional Centre for education of staff in the cases of emergency and natural disasters, the only one of this kind on the Balkans, was opened this autumn on Vodno.  Cooperation with representatives from the neighbouring countries and wider will be established in future in the field of educating staff for cases of emergency and natural disasters in urban areas. “The opening of the Centre means a new impulse of regional cooperation for the Red Cross. Its services and facilities will be used by certain ministries, specialized agencies, the emergency intervention units and the rest of the population. The newly opened facilities are just a segment of the overall project – an educational complex with a hall for 100 listeners, a library and two appropriately equipped offices for the teachers. The completion of the whole projects will be a great contribution for the creation of a system for security and protection within the country”, said Sait Saiti, president of the Red Cross Skopje at the opening of “Dare Bombol” Training Centre, on 26 October this year.

The vice-president of the Greek Red Cross, Sterjos Makrinos, added that the countries from the Balkan Peninsula are faced with the effects of the natural disasters quite often. He mentioned the recent floods in the region and the earthquakes from the recent past. Because of that, it is very important to have trained staff, Red Cross volunteers and to raise the people’s awareness for quick intervention and dealing with this type of risks. The Mayor of Skopje, Trifun Kostovski, said the Greek help in the construction of the Centre was a friendly guest. According to him, the Red Cross deed is of global interest which does not neglect the regional linking and the mutual work. Kostovski emphasized the need of having more such centres so that bigger part of the population and the expert Red Cross services can be involved.

Four years ago, the Macedonian Red Cross and the Red Cross Skopje presented the project of the Centre for education of staff and recreation of children and young people “Dare Bombol” in public. At a donors conference that took place in Budapest in 2001, the Greek Government donated 120 000 euros to our country for the realization of this idea. The project was also supported by the Macedonian Government. The project was drawn for free by Red Cross activists and professors at the Faculty of Architecture in Skopje.
