Macedonian Research Association – MRA
Bringing the astronomic phenomena and values closer to the citizens
The Macedonian Research Association (MRA) is a civil, non-party organization that has been implementing a number of activities since its establishing in 2003. One of the many activities they have been implementing is the research of the megalithic observatory Kokino, as well as discovering other archaeological localities related to certain astronomic contents. At this year’s NGO Fair, MRA, in cooperation with “Tumba” – Kumanovo, “IPK-Kumanovo and the Ministry of Culture, promoted the first Kokino catalogue in the form of leaflets and postcards of the place which are of an exceptional value. In cooperation with the National Museum from Kumanovo and the Planetarium at the Youth Cultural Centre in Skopje, the Macedonian Research Association logistic support teams for the researches and promotion of Kokino. The efforts were “crowned” this year when NASA placed Kokino in the prestigious fourth place in its list of old world observatories.
MRA publishes the only magazine for popularisation of the astronomy “Space” in Macedonian language in order to fill the existing gap in our educational system of not studying this natural science in the primary and secondary schools.
“The result of not studying astronomy is not being updated or not understanding at all the modern discoveries and researches in the field of astronomy, which on a global level are considered the moving force for development of the world civilization” – say at the MRA. In order to “alleviate” a bit the intellectual gap that exists between us and the developed world, they have so far published about 20 issues of the magazine “Space”.
This research association is currently working on the “Ethno-astronomy” project, part of which is the research of the old beliefs of people concerning the origin of the world, celestial bodies and the universe itself, as well as their presentation in public.
The project called “UV Radiation”, realized in cooperation with the Office for protection of the ozone layer at the Ministry of Environment, is dedicated to the popularisation of the problem with the increased UV rays and giving recommendations for appropriate behaviour in times when the index of this type of radiation is at its peak. So far, MRA has published the following brochures: “UV Radiation – Risks and Prevention” and “Global Protection of The Earth”.
MRA organizes actions for popularisation of the astronomy through public lectures and public observations with astronomic instruments of interesting celestial bodies, which have so far been attended by thousands of citizens.
