In Athens

The first mosque will be built

To celebrate the Olympic Games, Athens will build a mosque, the first in this city. It will be the first mosque built in Athens in 170 years. The Foreign Officer, Gorges Papandreou, said that the reason for building the mosque are the Olympic Games and that Athens wants to enable the Muslim contestants or visitors to the Olympics to practice their religion during the stay.

The mosque as an Islamic cultural center will be built in the northeast part of the city.

Athens is a unique capital within the European Union where there isn't a mosque. Thousands of Muslims who live in Athens, say their prayers and hold their rituals in their homes or they travel more than 80 k. to the north of Greece, where there are several mosques.
