School for Democracy
Democracy? No way without me!
The project "School for Democracy, realized by the Institute for Democracy, Solidarity and Civil Society and the Open Society Institute Macedonia Foundation, has entered its third phase. This phase includes about 1 200 previously trained individuals and NGO activists who will work interactively with the citizens. The implementation of the project began last year, and the present, third phase, is the last one and includes public campaign.
The democracy education will be implemented with the help of "democracy notebooks", the goal of which is to demystify and explain certain terms, related to the democratic processes. In the course of March, several trainings, dialogues and meetings with the citizens took place throughout the country.
-We have talked a lot about democracy in the last ten years, and we concluded that it is comprehended differently by everyone. What are the democratic institutions? It belongs to the citizens. It should be part of the civic consciousness and without it there is no civil society. The democracy means a process, which includes the majority, said Mr. Vladimir Milcin, OSIMF executive director, at the press conference where the third phase of the project was introduced (7 March, Skopje).
Within the project 60 workshops at 36 locations throughout Macedonia will take place, encouraging discussions on the democratic, that is, the non-democratic environment in which we live, thus raising the general awareness on what the citizens can do to improve their lives and create a democratic society.
The campaign will be implemented in the period between 1 March and 30 April this year. More than 150 NGO activists are involved in the realization of the project. 70 000 copies of 10 "democracy notebooks" in seven languages, will be printed within the project.
This project is financially supported by the British Embassy, DFID and OSIMF, and it includes many experts, professors and scientists. All the information regarding this project can be found on the web-site www.demokratija.org.mk.
