8 March marked in the Parliament
Women want more jobs
Every third place on the candidate lists to be given to a woman, more jobs for the women and improving the level of education – these were the three messages that women sent in symbolic manner from the parliament hall, where they gathered on 8 March – the International women’s day and held a joint assembly called “Look at the Parliament on 8 March”. Participants at the assembly were representatives from the Union of Macedonian Women Organizations, political parties, the business-sector, government institutions and international organizations, and were greeted by the spokesperson Ljupco Jordanovski who expressed his support to their demands. Natalija Drozd, OSCE Deputy Ambassador, appealed to all parties to approach women’s demands for their bigger participation on candidate lists more seriously. Marina Mioska from the National Institute for Statistics warned about the present condition with women illiteracy. Of the total 3.6% illiteracy in Macedonia, 76% falls to women. According to her, only 26 % of the active female population in 2004 was employed.
Professor Jorde Jakimovski said that women do not have a good access to the economic resources and bigger participation in the unpaid work.
Women seek jobs that are less paid, very often they do not receive any social security they work part-time, under a contract.
