H.E.R.A. protests

Informing on the death of an HIV-positive patient

The way of announcing the information on the death of a foreign citizen who had died at the Clinic for Infective Diseases in Skopje, provoked a severe reaction by the Health Education and Research Association – H.E.R.A.. The protest was initiated for several reasons, and a corresponding legal procedure to the Macedonian Ombudsman has been announced. H.E.R.A. initiative was supported by 25 NGOs. “Our idea is to make the public, especially the media, aware of the fact that one needs to be very careful when informing on such delicate and specific issues. Things must not be raised on sensational level, has to know which information can be published, how to publish it and to inform on the ways of transmitting HIV/AIDS, as well as on the Law for protecting the personal data. There was a case of revealing a doctor’s secret, which is against the Heraclites Oath. Revealing the patients name, his disease and the test results, as well as revealing the data concerning his private life has no effect on the protection of the Macedonian population”, said Drasko Kostovski from H.E.R.A.
