At the end of 2006

OHCHR closed their office in Macedonia.

OHCHR’s office finished the implementation of the technical cooperation project and stopped operating in Macedonia.  Starting from 2002, the project was supporting the strengthening of the national capacities for reporting to the international human rights bodies, including the human rights in the school systems and strengthening the civil society in the field of human rights.

The most important accomplishments of the office are the following: initiating a national process for preparing action plan for including the human rights education in the schools system; establishing and operating MINOP (a working group for strengthening the cooperation between the police and the civil sector); creating the nucleus of the group of human rights’ defenders; and submitting all belated national reports to the UN human rights bodies.

“Even though the project activities have come to an end, OHCHR wants to further support the UN team in Macedonia and its national partners in their efforts to strengthen the human rights protection from the position of human rights counselor which will be part of the UN Coordinator’s Office starting from 2007”, said Silvana Pesikj.
