People: Marija Savovska

My primary determination is promotion of women’s interests

Professional experience:
One part of my professional experience is related to the theatre, having in mind the fact that I am a graduated actress. From 1996 to 2005, I worked for the Foundation Open Society Institute Macedonia as a grant - realizer and then as women programs’ and “Istok-Istok” coordinator. In 2005, my professional engagement continued as a manager of the programs at “Akcija Zdruzenska”.

Engagement in the civil sector:
Most of my working experience is in the civil sector. However, I will mention that the activism and the promotion of women’s interests have always been my primary determination.

Hobbies and interests:
I do not have a special hobby, but I have many different interests.

Toughest decision:
There have been several “toughest” decisions, but the time proved them right.

Ambitions:
To live to be old and peaceful. This sounds like a joke, but after thinking about it for a long time, I came to the conclusion that I will have to spend some more quality time on making myself happier and more satisfied.

In her free time she reads:
Besides the things I have to read professionally, I read all the things that attract my interest. One problem when I read is that if I don’t find the book interesting at the start, I either leave it immediately, or read it until I see the end, forgetting everything around me. Therefore, it s my practice to “get armed” with a lot of books once a year, which I usually read during the holidays.

Where does she go in her free time:
Usually at the cinema, restaurant, rock-concerts, etc.

At weekends:
I must admit that I spend most of my weekends working, so when I have a free weekend I usually don’t go out of my home at all. I spend most of my time to my home obligations and my family, trying to “switch off” from the things that happen to me at work.

Which national/local problem does she find especially important and why?
Placing the problem of violence against women and gender inequality on the margins. This is logical for me, since I have been dealing with this problem not only professionally, but I see its overcoming as my life mission.

Which global problem does she find especially important and why?
The social injustice. If only one part of the huge amount of resources that are spent for destruction and violence (using ones security as an excuse) would be spent for improving the quality of people’s lives, this planet could become a better place for living.

What would she change in Macedonia/the world?
I would allocate the funds differently.

Advice/message:
Always have an attitude and try to keep your integrity.

I could never:
Come to terms with injustice of any kind.
